What is a canvas?

A canvas is a board of cards, notes, web pages, and groups you arrange and connect, saved as an Obsidian-compatible .canvas file.

A canvas is an endless board where you lay out ideas visually: cards with text, your notes, web pages, and groups, joined by arrows. It's saved as a .canvas file that Obsidian can open too.

Create one

Click New canvas next to New note, or choose it from the Tools menu.

Work on the board

  • Add things with the toolbar: Add card, Add note, Add web page, and Add group. Or double-click empty space to add a card.
  • Connect two items by dragging from the dot on a card's edge to another card.
  • Color cards and groups, delete what you've selected, and undo or redo.
  • Zoom in and out, or Zoom to fit to see everything.

Prefer the raw file? Edit as text shows the canvas as JSON.
